The project "Conservation of Macaronesian Sparrowhawk and Laurissilva habitat in Madeira Island" is coordinated by the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds in partnership with the Regional Direction of Forestry and Nature Conservation, Spanish Ornithological Society and Madeira Natural Park Service and is funded by the LIFE + financial instrument of the European Commission.
The main objective of this project is the conservation of a priority subspecies through the recovery and protection of their natural habitat - the Madeira Laurel Forest.
This forest has specific characteristics and exceptional biodiversity, giving it a priceless biological value. The recovery of this habitat, along with increased knowledge about the distribution, ecology and population trends of the Macaronesian Sparrowhawk in Madeira and the Canary Islands, will set appropriate conservation measures for this subspecies included in Annex I of the Birds Directive.
